What Fat?

The body is very efficient at extracting all the goodness it can from the food you eat. This was essential for survival when food was in short supply, however in today’s time of plenty this bodily efficiency simply leads to obesity.

An excess of most food leads to fat storage, whether it be eating fat, sugar or carbohydrates. Eating too much fat gets particular attention as it is linked to cholesterol problems.

When we eat fat the gall bladder releases bile which acts like a detergent, breaking down the fat so it can be more easily absorbed. People who have had their gall bladder removed know that this reduced fat absorption can be a benefit.

For the majority of us who still retain their gall bladder there is a potential dietary solution.

When food containing fat enters the digestive tract, it stimulates the secretion of the hormone cholecystokinin (CCK). This hormone stimulates the gall bladder to release bile and the pancreas to release water and ions and stimulates the secretion of a juice rich in pancreatic digestive enzymes, thus aiding the digestion of fat, protein, and carbohydrates.

CCK also mediates satiety, and the mechanism for this hunger suppression is thought to be a decrease in the rate of gastric emptying.

Reducing the levels of CCK could reduce the effectiveness of your body to absorb the ‘goodness’ from foods, especially fat, however this reduction may include the absorption of essential nutrients and minerals from the food, so supplements may be necessary.

Capsaicin, the active component of chili peppers, has been used in a number of studies and is believed to reduce CCK levels and thus inhibit the absorption from foods. This may also produce a satiety effect so reduce the desire for food.

A sensitivity to capsaicin or too much capsaicin can produce nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and burning diarrhea. Interaction with the hypertension drug Lisinopril may induce a side-effect cough. Care must be taken when handling as severe irritation can be caused to eyes on contact and to lungs if inhaled.
