5 Minute Cravings Cures

Those cravings for favourite foods are the most common reason why diets fail. Sticking to a diet can make you emotionally vulnerable to foods that provide comfort and security.

You know that giving in just once can undo weeks of hard work, yet you cannot help yourself, as you dip into the cookie jar, feel the smooth delight of chocolate in your mouth or crunch through the crisp coating on french fries.

Yet if you had stopped for just five minutes those cravings would have gone away and you would have been back in control. Yes just five minutes may have saved you from the guilt of lack of self control and depressed feelings that you will never be able to stick to a diet.

Try These

Remember, cravings only last between three and five minutes.

Pure pleasure - Make a list of activities you love doing. This can be anything that distracts you in a pleasurable way, such as reading a magazine, puzzles, putting on make-up, etc. Make it easy to do these at any time, so as soon as a craving starts distract yourself with pure pleasure.

Chew on it - Chew a stick of gum, be sure it’s sugarless, with zero or only a few calories. Chewing gum relieves stress and elevates mood so may help reduce calories consumed as a result of stress related eating. Chewing gum between meals can help keep you from reaching for snacks, however sugar free gum often contains sorbitol, which consumed too often can cause diarrhea, or aspartame has also been known to cause a number of adverse health effects, including migraines and nausea.

Wash it Away - A glass of cold pure water sipped slowly will dissolve away those cravings, especially if you crave salty snacks. Cold is best as you will expend energy warming the water in your stomach, though too cold may make you feel nauseous.

Brush it away - Cleaning your teeth can remove cravings as once your mouth is feeling minty clean and fresh, you won’t want to spoil it with salty chips or sugary candy.

Burn it away - Make a list of five minute exercises that you can do when cravings hit you. This could be walking, stretching, a yoga position, weights, dancing, etc.

Meditate -  Learning to meditate can help you stop cravings whenever they happen. This requires practice but once learned you could stop cravings before they start as your sub-conscious mind does all the work.
