Cinnamon

Most diabetics trying to control their sugar will know about cinnamon and how is is able to reduce blood sugar levels. However, this humble spice may also help you slim.

Cinnamon is particularly effective at reducing visceral and belly fat. Fat in these areas is known to be related to metabolic syndrome and the associated health problems, i.e. diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

Like with most natural health supplements, you need to experiment with how to incorporate cinnamon in your diet to gain maximum effect.

There are two types of cinnamon, Ceylon and cassia.

Ceylon cinnamon is usually supplied in its natural form as ‘sticks’ of roles of bark.

Cassia cinnamon is usually supplied as ground powder and is what most people use.

Cinnamon is best used in cooking, in drinks, etc, though can also be purchased in capsules and as a liquid tincture.

There does not appear to be a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ time to take cinnamon, however cassia cinnamon has a higher level of coumarin, which may increase the strain on your liver so you should restrict cassia cinnamon intake to no more that two teaspoonfuls per day.

Effectiveness

The various studies undertaken have provided mixed results, so medical opinion has been divided as to whether or not to recommend cinnamon to people wishing to lose weight. There have also been mixed results with regard to whether Ceylon or cassia cinnamon is most effective.

Our experience and feedback at Relax and Slim has been very positive for both types of cinnamon.

Pros and Cons

The biggest issues people have with cinnamon is taste. Some people love cinnamon, some don’t like it at all and some find that it repeats on them (cinnamon burps). You need around two teaspoonfuls per day so you need to be creative how you included it in your daily diet. Cinnamon is also available as capsules or a tincture (not to be used on the skin).

Cinnamon Mocha

In a mug, make your mocha with half a teaspoon of instant coffee, half a teaspoon of dark chocolate powder, half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder and hot (not boiling) water, plus sugar and milk to taste.

Stir well before and during drinking to prevent cinnamon sinking to bottom.
