In a recent British national sleep survey, 18% of people reported that their sleep was insufficient on the majority of nights, and nearly 60% of people reported insufficient sleep on one or more nights of the previous week. It is not just the amount of time in bed that’s important; difficulty getting off to sleep or disturbed, restless sleep can also create a significant sleep debt.
Through setting accurate sleep efficiency targets and monitoring these targets, it is possible to improve sleep. If sleep is improved this can be an important factor in correcting other areas that are both directly and indirectly associated with sleep.
The Ki Fit armband uses a number of different sensors to detect whether the user
is lying down and awake, or lying down and asleep, including an accelerometer to
detect movement, and sensors for skin temperature and galvanic skin response ('sweat'
response).
As well as measuring movement and the orientation of the body, the other sensors like skin temperature, heat flux and galvanic skin response (sweat response) are important, as these also provide information relating to your sleep status. For example, the body releases hormones before you fall asleep which cause a drop in body temperature, and this is one of the things that can be used when determining sleep patterns.
Your sleep quality results for each night are shown in your Activity Manager as a bar.

You can see that the darker blue shows when you are asleep and the lighter blue when you are lying down but not asleep. The ratio of dark blue to light blue is given as a percentage which is your 'sleep efficiency' score. The Activity Manager stores this sleep data over weeks and months so you can look back at summaries of between 7 and 28 days and see how your sleep patterns are over this time.
Research carried out as part of the development of the original technology used in the Ki Armband showed good correlations between the different sleep phases and the armband results, so this supports the accuracy of the product. NB: sleep phases information was only available in the earlier development models.
